Whirlpool Dishwasher FAE1 error code
FAE1 (fault 10-1) means the detergent dispenser has failed. The dispenser door is not opening or not signaling correctly, so detergent never releases into the wash.

What causes the FAE1 error?
- Failed detergent dispenser assembly
- Dispenser door jammed by caked detergent
- Loose or damaged wiring between the dispenser and the control
- Dishes or tall items blocking the dispenser door
- Failed main control board (rare)
How to fix Whirlpool FAE1 — step by step
Work through these in order, from simplest and safest first. Stop as soon as the code clears.
- Check for a blocked dispenser door
Open the dishwasher and look at the dispenser on the door. Make sure no tall item, utensil, or rack is blocking the little door from swinging open. Rearrange anything in its way. - Clean caked detergent from the dispenser
Scrape out any hardened detergent from the dispenser cup and around the door latch. Run hot water over the cup to dissolve buildup, then dry it. A jammed door is the most common fixable cause. - Power-reset the dishwasher
Unplug the dishwasher for 30 seconds, or flip its breaker off for 30 seconds and back on. Then run a cycle and check whether the dispenser door opened and the cup is empty at the end. - Use the right detergent
Switch to fresh, dry automatic-dishwasher detergent or pods that fit the cup. Old, clumpy detergent and gel packed too tightly can jam the door shut.
When to call a technician
- The dispenser is clean and unblocked but still will not open
- Dispenser wiring is damaged
- The dispenser assembly needs replacement
- FAE1 returns on every cycle after the checks above
Frequently asked questions
My dishes are dirty and the pod is still in the cup. Is that FAE1?
Yes — that is the classic symptom. The dispenser never opened, so no detergent entered the wash.
Can I just toss the pod in the tub instead?
As a one-time workaround, yes. But fix the dispenser — proper timing of detergent release matters for cleaning.
The dispenser door opens but FAE1 still shows. Why?
The position switch or the actuator inside the dispenser may have failed electrically. The dispenser assembly usually needs replacement then.
