Samsung Washing Machine 5E error code
The washer can't drain water out of the tub, so it stops and flags a drainage fault. Most of the time a clogged debris filter, kinked or blocked drain hose, or incorrectly installed drain hose is responsible.

What causes the 5E error?
- Clogged debris (drain pump) filter — lint, coins, hair clips
- Kinked, bent, or clogged drain hose
- Drain hose installed at the wrong height or inserted too far into the standpipe
- Drain hose frozen in cold weather
- Faulty drain pump motor or its wiring
- Washer not level, affecting drainage
How to fix Samsung 5E — step by step
Work through these in order, from simplest and safest first. Stop as soon as the code clears.
- Restart the washer
Power the washer off and back on, then start a cycle — it should attempt to drain at the beginning. Note the buttons stay disabled for about 3 minutes after the code appears. - Check the drain hose
Make sure the hose isn't kinked, frozen, or clogged, and is routed straight to the drain. It should sit at least 60 cm above the floor, be inserted no more than 6–8 inches into the standpipe, and must not form an airtight seal. - Clean the debris filter (front-load models)
Open the small access door on the front, lay a towel down with a shallow dish ready, pull out the emergency drain hose, remove its cap, and drain the water. Then turn the debris filter counterclockwise to remove it, rinse it under warm water, wipe the housing, reinsert and lock it clockwise, and close the access door.Safety warning: If a hot-water cycle ran recently, wait about an hour for the water to cool before opening the filter to avoid scalding. - Clear a blocked drain hose
Unplug the washer, empty the drum, and disconnect the drain hose from both ends. Remove any blockages, reconnect it securely with correct height and insertion depth, and run a test cycle.Safety warning: Always unplug the washer before disconnecting hoses; residual water will spill out.
When to call a technician
- Code persists after cleaning the filter and fixing the hose
- Drain pump makes no sound or sounds strained — possible failed pump or wiring fault
- Heavy water leaking from the pump area or hoses
- Burning smell from the pump, or any repair needing panel removal
Frequently asked questions
How often should I clean the debris filter?
Samsung recommends cleaning it regularly — about every 5–6 months — to prevent clogs, odors, and longer cycles.
Why does 5E come back every wash?
A recurring 5E usually means the filter is clogging again, the drain hose is installed wrong (wrong height or an airtight seal), or the pump itself is failing.
Can I run the washer with the emergency drain hose left out?
No — recap it and secure it back in place after draining, or water will spill during the next cycle.
