- Heater relay contacts welded shut on the control board
- Short between heater relay terminals on the board
- Line voltage reaching a heater relay output when the cycle is stopped
- Damaged wiring harness to the heater relays
- Failing electronic control board
How to fix Frigidaire E61 — step by step
Work through these in order, from simplest and safest first. Stop as soon as the code clears.
- Unplug the dryer if it overheats
A stuck-closed relay can keep the heater powered even when the dryer should be cooling down. If the dryer feels extremely hot or runs hot on every setting, unplug it immediately and do not run it again until it is repaired.Safety warning: A stuck heater relay is a fire risk. Do not leave the dryer running unattended with this code. - Power-reset the dryer
Unplug the dryer or switch off its breaker for 10 minutes, then restore power. Rarely, a glitch mimics a stuck relay. If E61 returns on the next cycle, the relay fault is real. - Call a technician for relay testing
Confirming a stuck relay means checking for shorts between the heater relay terminals with the cycle stopped, which requires a meter and an opened cabinet. If the wiring is fine, the electronic control board must be replaced. This is technician work.Safety warning: The relay test involves live-voltage checks inside the cabinet. Do not attempt it yourself.
When to call a technician
- E61 returns after a power reset (board replacement is near-certain)
- The dryer overheats or the heater stays on during cool-down
- You see any scorch marks on or near the control board area
- The dryer will not start a cycle at all
Frequently asked questions
Can I replace just the relay instead of the whole board?
No. The relays are soldered onto the electronic control board, so the board is replaced as one part.
My dryer with E61 runs a few minutes then stops. Why?
The control detects the relay fault during its self-checks and shuts the cycle down to protect the dryer. The short run time is the protection kicking in.
Is E61 the same as E63 or E64?
No. E61 is a stuck relay on the control board. E63 is the heater shorted to the cabinet (ground), and E64 is an open break in the heater circuit.
