Whirlpool Dryer PF error code
PF means the dryer detected a power failure while it was running. The cycle stopped because power was interrupted, and the dryer is telling you what happened — it is usually not a dryer fault.

What causes the PF error?
- House power outage or brownout
- Tripped circuit breaker
- Loose power cord or wall outlet connection
- Loose or burnt wires at the dryer terminal block
- Dryer plugged into an extension cord or power strip
How to fix Whirlpool PF — step by step
Work through these in order, from simplest and safest first. Stop as soon as the code clears.
- Clear the code and restart
Press START to continue the cycle, or press POWER to clear the display. Then select your cycle and press START again. If power is stable now, the dryer will run normally. - Reset the circuit breaker
Switch the dryer breaker fully OFF and back ON. If it trips again during the cycle, stop and investigate — a repeatedly tripping breaker signals a real electrical problem.Safety warning: A hot or buzzing breaker is an electrician call, not a DIY fix. - Check the power cord and outlet
Make sure the dryer plug is fully seated in the outlet. Look for a loose outlet, scorch marks, or a melted plug. Plug the dryer directly into the wall — never use an extension cord or power strip.Safety warning: Unplug the dryer before inspecting the cord. Do not use a damaged cord or a scorched outlet. - Inspect the terminal block (advanced)
With the breaker OFF, remove the terminal block cover on the back of the dryer and tighten any loose terminal screws. Look for burnt or discolored wires.Safety warning: Confirm power is off with a tester before touching anything. 240V wiring is not a beginner repair.
When to call a technician
- PF recurs with no known power outage
- The breaker trips repeatedly
- The terminal block, cord, or outlet shows burning or melting
- You need a new outlet, breaker, or dedicated circuit run
Frequently asked questions
PF shows after every storm. Is my dryer damaged?
Probably not — PF is doing its job by reporting the interruption. If it only appears after real outages, the dryer is fine. A surge protector for major appliances is good insurance.
PF keeps coming back with no outage. Why?
A loose terminal connection, a failing breaker, or a worn outlet can drop power for a split second — enough to trigger PF. Check the cord, outlet, and terminal block.
Can I just keep pressing START?
Once or twice is fine, but recurring PF means the power feed is unstable. Find the cause before it damages the control board.
