Whirlpool Dryer AF error code
AF means your dryer's airflow is badly restricted. Hot, moist air cannot get out of the house, so clothes stay damp and dry times get very long.

What causes the AF error?
- Lint screen clogged with lint or residue
- Dryer vent crushed, kinked, or disconnected behind the dryer
- Exhaust vent run full of lint or too many elbows
- Outside vent hood blocked by lint, snow, or a stuck flap
- Vent run longer than the installation instructions allow
How to fix Whirlpool AF — step by step
Work through these in order, from simplest and safest first. Stop as soon as the code clears.
- Clean the lint screen
Pull out the lint screen and clean off all lint with your hand or a soft brush. If you use dryer sheets, wash the screen with warm soapy water every few months, since residue can block airflow even when the screen looks clean. - Check the duct behind the dryer
Pull the dryer away from the wall and look at the vent duct. Straighten any kinks and reattach it if it has come loose. Replace a crushed duct with a rigid or flexible metal duct — never use plastic or thin foil.Safety warning: Unplug the dryer before moving it so the power cord is not stressed or damaged. - Clear the outside vent hood
Go outside and find the exhaust hood. Remove lint buildup and make sure the flap opens freely while the dryer is running. Hold your hand near it during a cycle — you should feel strong, warm airflow. - Clean the full vent run
Run a timed heated cycle and press any key to clear the AF display. If the code comes back, clean the entire vent from the dryer to the outside with a vent brush kit. A professional vent cleaning is worth it if the run is long or you cannot reach it.
When to call a technician
- AF returns after you fully cleaned the lint screen, duct, and vent run
- The dryer is overheating, has no heat, or shuts off mid-cycle
- The outside vent flap will not open or there is no airflow outside during a cycle
- You smell burning or see scorch marks around the vent area
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep using the dryer with AF showing?
For a load or two, but no longer. The dryer will keep running with AF, but the restriction raises the risk of overheating and blown thermal fuses — and in extreme cases, lint fires.
How do I clear the AF code?
Touch any key to clear it from the display, then run a timed heated cycle. Clearing the display does not fix the vent — if the blockage is still there, AF will come back.
AF keeps returning even though the vent looks clean. Why?
The blockage may be inside the dryer cabinet (around the blower housing) or the airflow sensor itself may have failed. Have a technician check it if the vent is confirmed clear.
