What causes the AF error?
- Lint screen clogged with lint or fabric-softener residue
- Exhaust vent crushed or kinked behind the dryer
- Lint buildup in the vent run or outside exhaust hood
- Vent run too long or with too many elbows
How to fix Maytag AF — step by step
Work through these in order, from simplest and safest first. Stop as soon as the code clears.
- Clean the lint screen
Remove the lint screen and clear all lint. If you use dryer sheets, wash the screen occasionally in warm soapy water to remove invisible residue, then dry it fully. - Check the vent behind the dryer
Pull the dryer forward slightly and make sure the vent hose isn't crushed or kinked. Confirm it's rigid or flexible metal — not plastic or foil.Safety warning: Unplug the dryer before moving it or handling the vent. - Clear the full vent run
Run the dryer 5–10 minutes, then hold your hand under the outside exhaust hood — airflow should feel like a hair dryer on high. If it's weak, clean lint from the entire vent length and the hood. - Restart on a timed heated cycle
Touch any key to clear the code, select a Timed Dry heated cycle, and restart. If the message persists, have the whole home venting run professionally cleaned.
When to call a technician
- Code returns after the vent is fully cleaned
- Airflow at the outside hood stays weak
- You smell burning or see scorch marks near the vent
Frequently asked questions
Can I still use the dryer with the AF code showing?
The dryer will keep running, but poor airflow wastes energy, wears clothes faster, and is a fire risk — clean the vent before doing more laundry.
How often should I clean the dryer vent?
Clean the lint screen after every load and have the full vent run cleaned every one to two years, or sooner if dry times get longer.
