Whirlpool Washing Machine F8E3 error code
F8E3 means the washer detected an overflow condition — too much water in the tub. The control stops the cycle and usually runs the drain pump to protect your floor.

What causes the F8E3 error?
- Water inlet valve stuck open and overfilling the tub
- Too much detergent causing excessive suds
- Pressure hose pinched, kinked, or leaking air so the level reads wrong
- Drain hose installed wrong, letting water siphon oddly
- Failed water level / pressure sensor
How to fix Whirlpool F8E3 — step by step
Work through these in order, from simplest and safest first. Stop as soon as the code clears.
- Stop the water
If water is still rising or the tub is very full, turn off the hot and cold supply valves behind the washer. Then run a Drain and Spin cycle to get the water out.Safety warning: If water is spilling onto the floor, turn the supply valves off first, then deal with the washer. - Cut the detergent
Too much detergent — or non-HE detergent — is a top cause of overflow readings. Run a rinse cycle with no detergent, and switch to measured HE detergent going forward. - Check the drain hose
Make sure the drain hose is not jammed too far into the standpipe (no more than about 4.5 inches), is not sealed airtight, and the standpipe is at least 39 inches off the floor. Bad drain geometry confuses the water-level sensing. - Power-reset the washer
Unplug the washer for 5 minutes, then plug it back in. If the overflow was a one-time sensor misread, the washer should run normally after the reset.
When to call a technician
- Water keeps rising with the supply valves on
- The inlet valve is stuck open
- The water-level sensor or pressure hose is faulty
- F8E3 returns on normal loads with correct detergent
Frequently asked questions
The washer filled to the top and will not stop. What do I do?
Turn off the water supply valves behind the washer immediately, then run Drain and Spin. A valve stuck open needs a technician.
Is F8E3 the same as F8E1?
No. F8E1 is the washer not detecting incoming water (too little); F8E3 is detecting too much water (overflow). Opposite problems, different fixes.
Can oversudsing really cause an overflow code?
Yes. Thick foam pushes the water-level sensor reading up and can even push water past the door seal.
