Whirlpool Oven F3 error code
F3 means the oven temperature sensor circuit is open. The control gets no temperature signal, so it cannot regulate heat and shuts the oven down.
Also shown as: F3
Last updated: October 6, 2026
What causes the F3 error?
- Failed oven temperature sensor (RTD probe)
- Loose or corroded sensor connector
- Broken wire between the sensor and the control
- Sensor damaged by extreme heat or cleaning chemicals
How to fix Whirlpool F3 — step by step
Work through these in order, from simplest and safest first. Stop as soon as the code clears.
- Power-reset the range
Switch the range breaker fully OFF for 2 minutes, then back ON. A one-time bad reading sometimes clears with a reset. - Look at the sensor
With the range breaker OFF, open the oven and find the thin metal probe sticking out of the back wall. Look for visible damage, heavy carbon buildup, or a loose mounting. Do not bend or pull it hard.Safety warning: Confirm the breaker is off before touching anything inside the oven. The sensor area can stay hot long after cooking. - Note when it fails
If F3 appears only above a certain temperature, tell your technician — that pattern helps them confirm a failing sensor versus a wiring problem.
When to call a technician
- F3 returns after a reset
- The sensor tests open on a meter
- Sensor wiring is damaged
- The control board is suspected after the sensor tests good
Frequently asked questions
Where is the oven temperature sensor?
Usually a thin metal rod protruding from the upper back wall inside the oven cavity, held by two screws.
What should the sensor read?
About 1,000–1,200 ohms at room temperature. An open (infinite) reading confirms the sensor has failed.
Can I bake with F3 showing?
No. Without a temperature signal the oven cannot control heat safely. It will stay locked out until the sensor is fixed.
