What causes the F0-E1 error?
- Clothes left in the drum when Clean Washer was started
- A forgotten item (sock, rag) at the back of the drum
- The washer's load sensor misreading an empty drum
- Starting the wrong cycle by accident
- Debris caught between the drum and the tub
How to fix Maytag F0-E1 — step by step
Work through these in order, from simplest and safest first. Stop as soon as the code clears.
- Empty the drum completely
Take every item out of the washer, including anything stuck behind the drum. Then restart the Clean Washer cycle. This is Maytag's official fix. - Restart the Clean Washer cycle
With the drum empty, select the Clean Washer cycle again and press Start. Add a washing machine cleaner tablet or a cup of liquid bleach if your manual recommends it.Safety warning: Do not mix bleach and vinegar-based cleaners. - Power reset if the code sticks
Unplug the washer for 5 minutes, then plug it back in. An empty drum plus a fresh start clears a sensor that latched onto the error. - Check for trapped items
Run your hand around the drum edge and the door boot (front-load) for a trapped sock or cloth. Trapped laundry can fool the load sensor.Safety warning: Unplug the washer before reaching into the drum area.
When to call a technician
- The code appears with a completely empty drum after a reset
- The washer will not start any cycle, not just Clean Washer
- You hear grinding that suggests something trapped between drum and tub
- The washer is under warranty
Frequently asked questions
Why does the Clean Washer cycle need an empty drum?
It uses high water levels and very hot water to flush out residue. Laundry in the drum would be damaged, and the sensor cannot calibrate with a load inside.
The drum looks empty but F0-E1 still shows. Why?
Check for a small item trapped behind the drum or in the door seal. If nothing is there, a power reset usually clears a stuck sensor reading.
How often should I run Clean Washer?
About once a month, or whenever the washer reminds you. Regular cleaning prevents odors and the residue that triggers sensor errors.
