GE Washing Machine E4 error code
Lid switch error. The washer does not detect the lid closing properly, so it will not run.
Also shown as: E4
Last updated: October 6, 2026
What causes the E4 error?
- Lid not fully closed
- Faulty lid switch
- Misaligned or warped lid
- Broken lid strike or latch
- Wiring fault to the lid switch
- Failed main control board
How to fix GE E4 — step by step
Work through these in order, from simplest and safest first. Stop as soon as the code clears.
- Close the lid firmly
Open the lid fully, make sure no clothing is caught in the rim, then close it firmly until you hear it latch. Press Start again. - Inspect the strike and latch
Look at the strike tab on the lid and the latch opening on the washer. If the strike is cracked, bent, or missing, the switch never engages. A technician can replace it quickly. - Unplug for one minute
Unplug the washer for one minute, then plug it back in and try a cycle. This clears a false lid-switch reading from a control glitch. - Call a technician for lid switch replacement
If the lid closes well and E4 persists, the lid switch itself has likely failed electrically. Switch testing and replacement are technician work.
When to call a technician
- The lid strike or latch is broken
- E4 persists with the lid firmly closed
- The lid switch needs replacement
- The wiring or main control board is faulty
Frequently asked questions
Can I run the washer with E4 showing?
The washer will not fill, agitate, or spin until the control sees the lid closed. E4 is a safety interlock, not a suggestion.
Can I bypass the lid switch?
No. Bypassing the lid switch defeats a safety device and can cause serious injury if the drum spins with the lid open.
The lid looks closed but E4 stays on. What else can I check?
Make sure the washer is level so the lid meets the switch squarely, and check that the strike tab lines up with the latch opening. A shifted or sagging lid misses the switch even when it looks shut.
