Frigidaire Washing Machine EF2 error code
Too many suds. The washer detected excessive foam in the drum and stopped to protect the wash.
Also shown as: EF2
Last updated: October 6, 2026
What causes the EF2 error?
- Too much detergent for the load size
- Non-HE detergent used in an HE washer
- Very soft water needing far less detergent
- Detergent buildup from months of overdosing
How to fix Frigidaire EF2 — step by step
Work through these in order, from simplest and safest first. Stop as soon as the code clears.
- Rinse the suds out
Run a Rinse and Spin or Rinse Only cycle with no detergent. Repeat until the water looks clear and no foam remains. It may take two or three rinses to flush a badly overdosed tub. - Switch to HE detergent and measure
Switch to a detergent labeled HE (high efficiency) and measure it. For soft water, use about half the normal dose. More soap does not mean cleaner clothes. - Do not add more soap
Do not add extra detergent to fix poor rinsing. Extra soap is what caused EF2. If clothes feel stiff, run one more plain rinse instead. - Run a monthly cleaning cycle
Once a month, run the washer's clean cycle (or the hottest long cycle empty) with a washer cleaner. This dissolves the detergent residue that builds up from overdosing.
When to call a technician
- Foam overflows from the door or detergent drawer
- EF2 returns even with tiny doses of HE detergent
- Water leaks from the door during the suds event
- The pressure sensor needs checking after repeated severe oversudsing
Frequently asked questions
How much detergent should I actually use?
The washer cannot sense that, so it is up to you. With soft water, one to two tablespoons of HE detergent is plenty for a normal load.
Will adding fabric softener kill the suds?
No. Fabric softener does not reduce existing foam and can add to residue. Run extra rinses with no products at all.
Does EF2 mean I must switch to HE detergent?
Yes. Front-loaders use very little water, so they need low-sudsing HE detergent. Regular detergent creates a foam party the machine cannot handle.
