Also shown as: EF1
Last updated: October 6, 2026
What causes the EF1 error?
- Drain pump filter (coin trap) packed with debris
- Sock or small garment jammed in the pump
- Lint and hair clogging the pump impeller
- Kinked drain hose slowing the pump
- Failed drain pump motor
How to fix Frigidaire EF1 — step by step
Work through these in order, from simplest and safest first. Stop as soon as the code clears.
- Clean the drain pump filter
Unplug the washer. Open the small access door at the bottom front, place towels and a shallow pan underneath, and slowly unscrew the pump filter cap. Remove coins, lint, hair, and small objects. Rinse the filter, check that the impeller behind it spins freely, then screw the cap back on firmly.Safety warning: Water will spill when you open the filter. Keep towels and a shallow pan ready, and never open it with a full drum of hot water. - Check the impeller spins freely
Reach behind the filter opening and gently spin the pump impeller with your finger. It should turn freely. If it is jammed, work the debris out carefully.Safety warning: Unplug the washer before putting fingers near the impeller. - Straighten the drain hose
Pull the washer out and inspect the drain hose for kinks or crushing. Straighten it and make sure it rises smoothly to the standpipe. - Test with an empty drain cycle
Run an empty Drain and Spin cycle. If water pumps out strongly, the clog is cleared. If the pump is silent or the code returns with a clean filter, the pump motor has likely failed.
When to call a technician
- The filter is clean but water still will not pump out
- The pump is silent or grinds during drain
- The impeller is broken or will not turn
- The drain pump motor needs replacement
Frequently asked questions
Can coins in pockets cause EF1?
Yes. Coins fall out of pockets, collect in the pump filter, and eventually block the impeller. Check pockets before every wash.
How often should I clean the pump filter?
Twice a year for normal households, more often if you wash pet bedding or work clothes. A two-minute check prevents most EF1 calls.
The pump hums but no water drains. Clog or dead pump?
A humming pump that moves no water is straining against a clog. A silent pump may have failed electrically. Clean the filter first either way.
