Frigidaire Washing Machine E21 error code
The washer cannot pump water out fast enough. The control timed the drain, it took too long, and the cycle stopped.

What causes the E21 error?
- Clogged drain pump filter (coin trap)
- Kinked or crushed drain hose
- Blocked standpipe or household drain
- Failed drain pump motor
- Debris jammed in the pump impeller
- Wiring fault to the drain pump
How to fix Frigidaire E21 — step by step
Work through these in order, from simplest and safest first. Stop as soon as the code clears.
- Clean the drain pump filter
Unplug the washer. Find the small access door at the bottom front of the machine and open it. Place towels and a shallow pan underneath, then slowly unscrew the pump filter cap. Pull out coins, lint, hair, and any small objects. Screw the cap back on firmly.Safety warning: Water will spill when you open the filter. Keep towels and a shallow pan ready, and never open it while the drum is full of hot water. - Straighten the drain hose
Pull the washer out and check the full length of the drain hose for kinks, crushing, or sharp bends. The hose should rise smoothly to the standpipe without sagging loops that trap water. - Run a test drain cycle
With the filter clean, run a Drain and Spin cycle with the washer empty. Listen for the pump: a steady hum that moves water is good; a loud grinding or silence points to a failed pump. - Call a technician for pump replacement
If the filter is clear, the hose is straight, and water still will not pump out, the drain pump motor has likely failed. Pump replacement is a common technician repair.
When to call a technician
- The pump filter is clean but water still will not drain
- The pump makes no sound or grinds loudly during drain
- E21 appears even with an empty drum
- The drain pump needs replacement
Frequently asked questions
Can a lost sock cause E21?
A sock can slip past the gasket and lodge in the pump or hose. It is one of the most common causes of a sudden E21.
Does drain hose position matter for E21 too?
Yes. A drain hose jammed deep into a sealed standpipe can siphon or back up, slowing the drain enough to trigger E21.
There is standing water and the door is locked. What now?
Standing water plus electricity is risky, and forcing the door can break the lock. Bail gently, then service the drain before running another cycle.
