Bosch Oven E6 error code
E6 means the oven got too hot during cooking — an over-temperature condition. On some wall-oven controls it is reported as a general control board problem. Either way, the oven shuts heat off as protection.

What causes the E6 error?
- Failed temperature sensor under-reporting heat
- Stuck bake or broil relay keeping the element powered
- Blocked oven vents trapping heat
- Failed cooling fan
- Control board fault (wall-oven control family)
- Door seal leak confusing the temperature regulation
How to fix Bosch E6 — step by step
Work through these in order, from simplest and safest first. Stop as soon as the code clears.
- Turn off and let it cool fully
Turn the selector to OFF and let the oven cool completely with the door closed. The code usually clears once the temperature drops to a safe level.Safety warning: Do not open the door repeatedly while it is overheated. - Check the vents and door seal
With the oven cool, check that the oven vents are not blocked by foil or pans, and look at the door gasket for tears or gaps. Trapped heat triggers over-temperature faults. - Power reset after cool-down
Turn the breaker off for one minute, then on. Try a moderate Bake and watch whether the oven holds temperature or climbs past the set point. - Stop using it if it overheats again
If the oven runs away past the set temperature again, the sensor or a welded relay is at fault. Stop using the oven and call a technician.Safety warning: An overheating oven is a fire risk. Do not leave it running unattended.
When to call a technician
- The oven overheats again after cooling
- You smell burning or see smoke
- The sensor, relays, or board need testing
- The oven is under warranty
Frequently asked questions
Can blocked vents really cause E6?
Yes. If heat cannot escape normally, the cavity temperature climbs past the control's limit and it flags over-temperature.
The oven seems fine now. Should I still worry?
Yes. Over-temperature faults often come from a drifting sensor or a relay that sticks intermittently. Have it checked before it happens mid-cooking.
What is the difference between E6 and E2?
Both involve overheating. E2 is the severe runaway condition (over about 635°F); E6 is over-temperature during normal cooking, a step below that.
