Samsung Refrigerator 5E error code
The sensor that monitors the fridge compartment evaporator during defrost cycles has failed. Defrost cannot run correctly, so ice can build up and block cold airflow in the fridge section.
Also shown as: 5E, 5C

What causes the 5E error?
- Failed fridge defrost sensor on the evaporator
- Sensor separated from its housing near the evaporator coils
- Loose, cut, or corroded sensor wiring
- Short circuit in the sensor circuit
- Sensor reading out of range (above 65 C / 149 F or below -50 C / -58 F)
- Main control board misreading the sensor
How to fix Samsung 5E — step by step
Work through these in order, from simplest and safest first. Stop as soon as the code clears.
- Power-cycle the refrigerator
Unplug the fridge for 2 to 5 minutes, then restore power. This clears false codes from power glitches. A 5E that returns immediately means a real sensor or wiring fault.Safety warning: Unplug the fridge before touching any wiring. - Defrost the fridge section fully
Unplug the fridge, move perishables to a cooler, and leave the fridge door open for a few hours with towels down. This melts ice around the evaporator and sensor, which is a common trigger.Safety warning: Never chip ice off coils with a sharp tool. - Keep the fridge vents clear
Food packed against the back wall blocks airflow and ices up the evaporator area. Leave space around the vents so air circulates. - Check the door gaskets
Leaky gaskets feed constant humidity to the evaporator, overwhelming defrost and icing the sensor. Clean the gaskets and replace any that are torn.
When to call a technician
- 5E returns after a power cycle and full defrost
- Frost rebuilds quickly on the fridge evaporator
- The defrost sensor, heater, or fuse needs testing or replacement
- The main control board is suspect
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between 5E and 2E?
2E is the fridge compartment temperature sensor. 5E is the defrost sensor on the fridge evaporator coils - it monitors defrost cycles, not the air temperature.
My fridge is getting warmer with 5E showing. Why?
Failed defrost lets frost choke the evaporator, so less cold air reaches the fridge compartment even though the system is running.
Where is the fridge defrost sensor?
In the refrigerator compartment behind the Twin Cool cover, near the upper right of the evaporator coils. Accessing it requires panel removal - technician work.
