- Failed ice room fan motor
- Loose or damaged fan wiring connector
- Frost from a leaky ice maker door or gasket
- Failed main control board
How to fix Samsung 40E — step by step
Work through these in order, from simplest and safest first. Stop as soon as the code clears.
- Power-cycle the refrigerator
Unplug the fridge for 2 to 5 minutes, then plug it back in and listen near the ice maker for the fan. A reset rules out a temporary electronic glitch. - Defrost the ice maker area
Ice around this fan is the most common cause. Unplug the fridge, leave the freezer and ice compartment open for a few hours with towels down, then restart and check whether the fan runs.Safety warning: Do not chip ice with sharp tools near the ice maker housing. - Clear frost from the ice compartment
Remove the ice bucket and clear any frost or ice chunks packed around the fan cover and air passages. Reseat the bucket firmly when done. - Check the ice compartment door and gasket
A door that does not seal lets humid air in, which keeps re-icing the fan. Make sure it closes fully and the gasket is intact.
When to call a technician
- The fan stays silent after a full defrost and reset
- 40E keeps returning within days
- The ice room fan motor needs replacement
- The control board is not driving the fan
Frequently asked questions
Is 40E the same as 21E?
No. 21E is the main freezer evaporator fan. 40E is the smaller fan dedicated to the ice maker compartment - usually in the fridge door or upper section on French-door models.
My ice is soft and frosty with 40E. Why?
Without the fan moving cold air over the ice maker, the compartment runs warmer and humid, so cubes come out soft and frost builds up.
Will a manual defrost fix 40E for good?
It fixes ice-blocked fans, but if frost returns quickly there is usually an air leak or a failing defrost part - get a technician to check.
