What causes the sud error?
- Too much detergent
- Non-HE detergent used in an HE washer
- Soft water combined with a normal detergent dose
- Detergent buildup from previous washes
How to fix LG sud — step by step
Work through these in order, from simplest and safest first. Stop as soon as the code clears.
- Let the reducing cycle finish
The washer handles the suds on its own. Do not add more detergent or open the door repeatedly. - Run Rinse and Spin to clear suds
If suds remain, turn the washer off and on, then run a Rinse+Spin cycle with no detergent to flush them out. - Use less HE detergent next time
Switch to high-efficiency (HE) detergent and use the smallest recommended dose. In soft water areas, use even less.
When to call a technician
- SUD appears on every load with correct detergent
- The washer will not drain the sudsy water
- You suspect a drain or pressure sensor fault
- Detergent residue smell never goes away
Frequently asked questions
Why does the cycle take 2 extra hours with SUD?
The washer pauses and runs extra rinses to break the foam down safely instead of spinning a foam-filled drum.
I used the normal amount. Why SUD?
Normal amounts of non-HE detergent foam far too much in HE washers. The detergent type matters more than the amount.
Can suds damage the washer?
Occasionally, no. Chronic over-sudsing leaves residue that causes odors and can confuse sensors.
