- Damaged sensor wiring
- Corroded connector at the evaporator
- Sensor drifted out of specification
- Failed main control board
How to fix LG er-ds — step by step
Work through these in order, from simplest and safest first. Stop as soon as the code clears.
- Power reset the fridge
Unplug the fridge for 10 minutes, then plug it back in. This clears temporary sensor glitches. - Do a manual defrost
Unplug the fridge and leave the doors open for 8 to 12 hours with food in a cooler. Heavy ice around the sensor can cause false readings.Safety warning: Never chip ice off the coils with a sharp tool. You can puncture the refrigerant lines. - Check the sensor connector
If you can safely reach the evaporator area, make sure the sensor plug is firmly seated. Loose molex plugs are a known cause.Safety warning: Unplug the fridge and let voltages discharge before touching any internal connectors.
When to call a technician
- The code returns after a reset and defrost
- Frost keeps building up inside the freezer
- The fridge section is warming up
- Water is pooling under the crisper drawers
Frequently asked questions
What does the defrost sensor do?
It tells the fridge when the evaporator coils are warm enough to end the defrost cycle. Without it, the fridge cannot defrost safely.
Is Er dS the same as Er dH?
No. Er dS means the sensor itself is bad. Er dH means the defrost cycle ran but the coils never got warm, which points at the heater.
Can I replace the sensor myself?
It is a small plug-in part, but reaching it means opening the evaporator cover. If you are not comfortable with that, call a technician.
