What causes the SUD error?
- Too much detergent for the load size
- Using regular non-HE detergent in an HE washer
- Extra-heavy load combined with overdosing
- Partially blocked drain pump or filter making the suds reading worse
How to fix Kenmore SUD — step by step
Work through these in order, from simplest and safest first. Stop as soon as the code clears.
- Let the automatic routine finish
When SUD shows, the washer pauses tumbling and adds water to break the bubbles, then rinses extra. This can repeat several times. Let it finish on its own instead of canceling. - Run a rinse with no detergent
After the cycle ends, run a Rinse/Spin cycle and then a Normal cycle with no detergent at all. This clears leftover detergent from the load and the tub. - Switch to HE detergent and measure it
Use only High Efficiency detergent, and use the small measured dose for your load size. More detergent does not mean cleaner clothes in an HE washer. - Check the drain path
Make sure the drain hose is not kinked or clogged, and clean the drain pump filter. Poor draining traps sudsy water and makes the code more likely.Safety warning: Unplug the washer before opening the drain pump filter; water will spill.
When to call a technician
- SUD appears on every load even with the correct HE dose
- The washer never finishes the suds routine and gets stuck
- The drain pump filter is clear but water drains very slowly
- The pressure switch or control board needs testing
Frequently asked questions
Is SUD an error or normal?
It is a warning, not a breakdown. The washer detected too many suds and is fixing it with extra rinses. The cycle will take longer than usual.
Why does SUD appear with HE detergent?
Even HE detergent causes this if you use too much. Cut the dose down and the code should stop appearing.
Can I open the door when SUD shows?
Wait until the routine finishes and the door unlocks. Opening mid-cycle is not needed; the washer handles the suds by itself.
