What causes the LE error?
- Washer overloaded with heavy laundry
- Too much detergent causing a suds lock
- Item stuck between the spin basket and the outer tub
- Loose or broken wiring to the drive motor
- Failed drive motor, tachometer, or hall sensor
How to fix Kenmore LE — step by step
Work through these in order, from simplest and safest first. Stop as soon as the code clears.
- Lighten the load and restart
Take out some clothes so the basket is only loosely full. Close the door and start the cycle again. Heavy loads are the most common trigger for LE. - Let the suds settle
If you see lots of foam in the tub, let the washer sit idle for 30 minutes so the suds break down. Then run a Drain/Spin cycle to remove the sudsy water, and rewash the load with no detergent. Use about 1 tablespoon of HE detergent per load going forward. - Power-reset the washer
Unplug the washer for 5 minutes to let the control reset, then plug it back in and try the cycle again. - Check the basket by hand
Cancel the cycle and take the clothes out. Drain any water with a Drain/Spin cycle on No Spin. Then unplug the washer, open the door, and turn the basket by hand. If it does not turn smoothly, something is jammed or the bearing is damaged.Safety warning: Unplug the washer before reaching into the tub or turning the basket by hand.
When to call a technician
- The basket does not turn smoothly by hand
- LE returns with a small load and correct detergent
- The hall sensor or drive motor needs replacement
- The spin bearing is damaged, which needs full disassembly
Frequently asked questions
What does LE mean on a Kenmore washer?
It means the control thinks the drive motor is locked and cannot turn the drum. Overloading and too much detergent are the most common causes.
How do I reset the LE code?
Unplug the washer for 5 minutes, plug it back in, and restart the cycle. Also reduce the load and the detergent, since those are the usual triggers.
Can too much detergent really lock the motor?
Yes. Heavy suds create so much drag that the motor cannot turn the drum at the expected speed, and the control reads that as a locked motor.
